SCE41 Neoprene: Everyday Choice for Seals and Gaskets

SCE41 Neoprene: Everyday Choice for Seals and Gaskets

Not every job comes with a detailed material spec. Sometimes you just need a gasket that seals, a strip that protects, or a bumper that takes a knock.

That's where SCE41 comes in. It's our general-purpose, low-cost closed-cell sponge. For any gasket, seal, cushion or bumper with no precise spec to meet, it's our default choice.

In this post, we'll cover what SCE41 is, why it seals so well, and how it has become the workhorse of the foam world.

What SCE41 is (and why it's a "blend")

SCE41 is a versatile, black closed-cell sponge neoprene blend. Most people in the trade call it neoprene. But it's worth being clear: SCE41 is a blend, not pure neoprene. It combines neoprene with SBR and EPDM.

This blend is what gives it its unique characteristic of being soft yet resilient.

What does closed-cell mean? The material is full of small, even gas pockets. Each pocket is sealed off from the next. This makes the sponge light and flexible, and it stops air and liquid from passing straight through. It also resists dust and moisture, along with good all-round electrical and temperature performance. The result is a versatile, reliable material for everyday applications.

SCE41 works best when:

  • The surfaces are uneven or fragile
  • The assembly won't apply much compression force
  • Flexibility matters

Five common applications

Sealing

SCE41 fills uneven gaps between parts, which makes it useful for sealing. It's used in automotive applications, and it meets several specifications used in the automotive industry, such as SAE J-18 and GMW15473.

Weather stripping

Windows and doors must stop air and water from passing through, by regulation. SCE41 weather stripping fills the gaps around frames and keeps the weather out.

Gasketing

Outdoor light fixtures need gaskets that keep out dust and moisture. Outdoor lighting is one of our focus industries, and SCE41 is a common choice for these gaskets.

Cushioning and padding

SCE41 is a simple way to stop hard surfaces from damaging each other. For example:

  • Garage doors - A strip inside the door stops it from scratching when it opens against a wall.
  • Store entrances - Line the metal floor grilles in store entrance vestibules with SCE41 stripping. It acts as a spacer, so metal doesn't strike metal.
  • Anti-scratch spacers between metal, glass, and wood.
  • Hard-hat liners.

Bumpers and shock absorption

SCE41 makes a simple, low-cost bumper. It absorbs impact and helps protect equipment and the materials it handles, such as on mining conveyors. Over time, it can become scratched or torn, but it buys time before parts need replacing.
